Special Invitation for Anglo-Peruvian Society Members
We are delighted to invite you to a private guided tour of the exhibition “Peruvian Abstraction”, led by the artist Patica Jenkins Gibson, on Tuesday 18th November.
In Latin America, and particularly in Peru, abstraction became very complex. It was a powerful tool for Peruvian artists to modernize their visual discourse without falling into exoticism or folkloric idealization. Key figures like Elena Izcue, Fernando de Szyszlo, and Jorge Eielson recognized the pre-Hispanic legacy as an inexhaustible source of visual codes, bridging global avant-garde and ancient history.
Patica Jenkins Gibson (Arequipa, 1954), a lawyer turned artist, embodies this. Her painting is a visual manifesto of concrete art, dominated by pure geometric compositions with straight lines and saturated colors. Patica subtly incorporates modules and serialized rhythms, typical of concretism, alongside symmetrical patterns from Andean textiles.
Her work also features flexible geometry with undulating and curved forms, giving movement to her compositions. Here, Andean women appear as visual archetypes, wearing concave headdresses and bodies depicted in colored lines simulating Andean cloaks (unkus). This iconic synthesis directly references pre-Hispanic techniques, where figures were reduced to their minimal graphic expression, recalling Wari ceramics and Paracas textiles.
Patica Jenkins Gibson's work demonstrates how abstraction, far from being an escape from reality, honors ancestral codes while seeking universality.
